Journeying to Denver for the first time. April 8, 2008

Tomorrow morning after my oil change I am taking off on a two day road trip to Denver, the city where I will spend the next two (or so) years working on graduate degrees at DU.  I will be attending the Graduate School of International Studies “Discover GSIS” event on Thursday and Friday of this week.  Here is an excerpt from my registration email:

Through this event you will learn more about GSIS- our programs, financial aid, career services and internships; as well as get a feel for the University of Denver and the city of Denver. We also have sessions planned for you to meet with our faculty, current students, and representatives from our student organizations. We hope you’ll be able to join us for the entire event and look forward to meeting you!

I am nervous and excited…I really have no idea what to expect.  I certainly hope that there will be a lot of other students there, so that I can network with some of my future classmates.  I also hope that there will be an opportunity to sit in some of my classes and gauge what will be expected of me.  I am confident that I will do well no matter how difficult the work is; I have learned that I have the ability to work extremely hard at my studies, and I know I will do whatever it takes to succeed.  I would also like to have a chance to apply for some graduate teaching assistantships and research assistantships and get a fair idea of what my financial situation will be for the next several years.  I need to try to remember to check out some of the apartments I was looking at near campus, too, just to see if they are in fact viable.  Perhaps I can fill out an application now and get things ready for fall.

In some ways it seems that the spring is moving towards summer so quickly, and that fall will be here before I know it.  So much to do in the meantime including orchestrating an entire cross-country move, getting a summer job, saving lots of money, spending quality time with my Seattle friends, not to mention all of the undergraduate work I have to finish up this summer after graduation including my thesis!  It’s going to be a busy season in my life, and a very exciting one at that.  It would be nice if I could have as much accomplished in Denver on this trip as possible.

I will be able to be reached by phone as I am driving.  Feel free to call or text!
